Row Boat Plans - Things To Consider

There are many things that goes into a well designed boat specifically designed for rowing. It has to have the specification that makes it effective and easy to maneuver for rowing. And that is specially the design that goes into a very good row boat plans for those who wish to build their very own row boat.
Row boat are powered by oars which have a mechanical connection to the boat which makes it distinctly different from paddle boats.
There are some factors, often competing ones that should be taken on a balance to build an efficient and well-designed row boat. Some of the imperatives that has to be taken into consideration in a row boat plans are:
WATERLINE BEAM
There has to be a balance on the waterline beam or simply the width of the boat. If the width is too narrow, it will leave the occupant the risk of falling out and if it is too high, the boat will be caught in the waves and will make the speed of the boat considerably slower.
FREEBOARD
Freeboard is the height above the waterline. This should be kept a a very good height in proprtion to the overall size of the boat because if the freeboard is too high then there's a good possibility that it will be very difficult for the rower to take full control of the boat during high winds. On the other hand,if it is too low, water will enter the boat even with just moderate waves.
LENGTH AND WIDTH RATIO
Longer boats are easier to row and can hold a course very well while a wider boat adds stability to the structure. Therefore it is imperative that you settle on a very good and efficient ratio for a rowboat. Most row boat plans follow a 1:4 width-length ratio.
Overall, the rowboat should be designed that makes it efficient for rowing. And these are but some of the factors that merits some consideration in a good rowing boat plans.
Personally, I've worked with row boat plan when I was building a rowing boat. The thing with building your own boat is that it can be most rewarding and way cheaper than buying a boat. But to get the most out of the experience, you have to have a very good plan in the first place.
