Feng Shui Tips for Furniture Placement in a Small Space

Author: Vicki Honeycutt

The process of using Feng Shui techniques to de-clutter and downsize (from a previous article) has been very challenging, intense, and at times overwhelming.  When I first moved in and looked at the chaos in my living room - it looked like a train wreck between Pottery Barn and Chico’s!  However, I stayed on track with my determination to establish a more peaceful living space and continued to use my Feng Shui principles to accomplish this.

From the outset, I made the decision to take my favorite pieces of furniture, pictures, accessories, books, and, of course, my 2 Japanese Bobtail cats!  And I knew I wanted to place the main, large pieces of furniture in a “power position” within each room - in order to maximize the feeling of comfort and security.

Below are some of the specific Feng Shui principles I used.  Again, the source of reference is Collins’ book, The Western Guide to Feng Shui - Room by Room.

Living Room:

  • Situate your sofa so that it has a view of the door. [Power position!]
  • Strike a “just right” balance with the number of decorative items you display. [I incorporated my 2 favorite paintings as well as my Ben Owen Chinese red pottery.]
  • Choose furnishings that are safe and comfortable, as well as beautiful.
  • Put the TV and other electronic equipment behind closed doors.

Kitchen:

  • Clean your stove, use all burners, and give the cook a commanding view. [Power position! I placed a mirror behind the stove so I could see behind me while cooking.]
  • Organize your countertops and cabinets.
  • Choose designs that curve or have rounded corners. [I set up my round, wrought iron table for two.]
  • Include seating in the kitchen.
  • Replace or minimize the use of fluorescent lighting. [I like using light bulbs that closely replicate natural light, such as GE Reveal bulbs.]

Bedroom:

  • Place your bed so that you can see the door. [Power position!]
  • Move desks and exercise equipment to other rooms, or screen them from the bed. [I only have room for my bed and a couple of dressers!]
  • Either have no television in your bedroom at all, or put it in a cabinet or armoire.
  • Drape mirrors at night, or remove them from the room. [I placed my mirrors so that I cannot see my reflection in them while lying in bed.]
  • Select natural, sensuous linens.

I would avoid this switch. depending on the ga. aluminum you can get, the spacing of ribs and stringers could change. Also key structural elements like the motor mounts and transom may have to be redesigned. If you are well versed in working and welding Aluminum, or have boat building experience, what I’d do is look for plans for a similar boat designed for aluminum. Many navel architects sell plans for a few hundred dollars, money well spent in this case. OR find a boat that you like and copy it, right down to the lase rivet. Good luck!.

This is disgusting. I have a hard time feeling sympathetic for a person that allows themselves to become this way. I understand that some people become this way due to medical conditions but many become this way out of laziness. It is freakin’ sad.

Does anyone have any plans and instructions on how to build a small easy to make sail boat?
My mate and i have been wanting to build a boat for a while now and want a boat that a 13 year old can make for really cheap. We want one that can go out on the bay and be stable. We just want it for fishing, recreational sailing and just lazying out on the bay. All we want is a boat that we can make in the christmas holidays that wont take long and is cheap. So if anyone has any designs or plans (step by step instructions would be handy) that you think we will be interested in please send then to us.

Isn’t needing a forklift to go outside a sign to start dieting?
Forklift Helps 700-lb Mexican Man Take Rare Outing

MONTERREY, Mexico – A 700-pound (310-kilogram) man once considered the world’s most obese person left his home for the first time in five months Sunday with the aid of a forklift and a platform truck.

Manuel Uribe traveled to the shore of a lake in northern Mexico without ever leaving his specially designed bed. A forklift hoisted the bed onto the truck, which then hauled him to the lake, where he snacked on fish and vegetables and joked with a local boat operator.

Looking at the boatman’s small craft, Uribe joked, “Too bad I can’t get on it — it would sink.”

Once considered the world’s fattest man when his weight hit over half a ton, more than two years of steady dieting had helped Uribe drop to about 700 pounds (310 kilograms) as of June — 550 pounds (250 kilograms) less than his former Guinness record weight of 1,235 pounds (560 kilograms). He did not say what his current weight is.

While somewhat bothered by the summer heat, Uribe appeared to enjoy Sunday’s outing. He is still unable to walk, and his last planned outing in March was aborted after the platform carrying his bed got stuck under an overpass.

His last successful trip outside his home was in March 2007, when six people pushed Uribe’s wheel-equipped iron bed out to the street as a mariachi band played and a crowd gathered to greet him.

Before that, he hadn’t left his home in five years.

BOATBUILDERS!!! Can you tell me some quick, easy, and cheap canoe/kayak/small boat designs I can try?
I’m in construction tech. And we have to build a project. And we have about 16 hours of building time.

My family already has a jon boat, but I want something small that I can use a double paddle or a electric thrust motor with a shallow draft. And I got to be able to carry it without a trailer (probably on top of my car). A trailer or internal combustion engine would make this project expensive.

I weigh about 250 pounds and will be using the boat for fishing. So add an extra 15 pounds of fishing gear. I know that seems like a lot of fishing gear, but I’m rounding up.

I came up with a cajun pirogue and I’ll just hack off the tip of the back. Put a half inch triangle of plywood there, so if I wanted to, later on I can mount an electric motor on it later. The problem is that a pirogue would be mostly made with glue and fiberglass tape. That’s just an inconvience when compared to nails or screws.

Anybody got any design suggestions. All I need is a name. Google can find me a design of it. Or an alternate plan to tackling a pirogue.

    IF ANYTHING

Suggestions in the art of boatbuilding will be helpful.

Can I use aluminum to build an 18′ speedboat designed in plywood?
I live in Brazil and want to use the boat on the Amazon river. Unfortunately, marine plywood is not available or extremely expensive as is also epoxy fiberglass resin. The last combination I want is inferior plywood with polyester resin especially as the boat will need to stay in the water the great majority of the time. So, I’d really like to build with aluminum–looks like it should be fairly intuitive to exchange building media, but I’m not a boat designer. I’m well aware of the tendency for people to make design propagation errors due to small deviation from plans and engineers’ aggravation with people who do so, so I’m reluctant to approach the designer with something as momentous as a materials switch. Does anyone have experience with this? I’m particularly interested in Bateau’s TX18 inverted V boat. http://www.bateau.com/boats/TX18/index.html

Or do you know of any similar designs already in aluminum?
